For the slotted cutting technique, the main tools are the drill and the saw. At the same time, the type of sawing tool can be any: from a handsaw to a jigsaw.
How to make carved frames in a fast automated way? To do this, you can use the help of power tools:
- Electric drill. Required for drilling preliminary holes in the workpiece for the jig saw factory.
- Jigsaw. It has high performance and significantly speeds up and simplifies the manufacture of carved products. For a beautiful neat cut it is better to use files with a fine tooth.
- Manual frezer. The performance of the manual router is lower than that of a jigsaw, and some skills will be required when handling the tool. However, the saws obtained by the router are very accurate, and preliminary drilling of the holes is not required.
The process of manufacturing casing hand milling
Making carved platbands
To work on the manufacture of carved platband will need the following tools:
- patterns for drawing a pattern;
- emery paper of various granularity;
- jigsaw or hand mill;
- electric drill and wood drill;
- set of chisels for carving.
The stages of manufacturing window casing include the following items:
- First measurements are taken from the window.
- Wood is chosen for the platband of the desired width and height (the main thing is to fit the stencil of the selected pattern). Thickness of the plank for laid on carving – 1 cm, for the through – 3 cm.
- The surface of the wood is well treated with sandpaper, starting with coarse-grained. Finally, the workpiece is ground with a zero grit sandpaper.
- A stencil is applied to the prepared surface and the drawing is transferred. Through gaps are painted over.
- Cutting ornament. If an electric jigsaw is used for work, the holes in the pattern are first drilled into which the jigsaw is filed and the pattern is cut. The outer contour is cut through the outer edge of the board. The designs of many models of electric jigsaws allow making cuts at angles of 45 or 90 degrees. You can use these features to make beautiful edges on the pattern.
- The cuts and holes are well ground with sandpaper. Use a damp cloth to wipe the product to remove residual wood dust.
- Carved overhead elements are fixed on the casing cloth on nails without caps or on glue.
Installing the finished trim on the window
On wooden windows platbands can be fixed as follows:
- Deaf thorn. With this type of mounting, a spike is installed in the casing, and a suitable hole is drilled in the frame. The spike is smeared with glue and inserted into the groove. This mount is quite difficult to do, but it is reliable and imperceptible to the eye.
- Through spike The method is less reliable, but it is easier to perform. The spike fastening system is installed in those areas where the fastening will not be very noticeable.
To decorate the attachment points, you can mix fine sawdust with glue and mask the holes. This is done before painting the trim. If you need to install the trim on the frame of the plastic window, use liquid nails, so as not to drill holes in the plastic.
Example of mounting carved platband on plastic windows
The dyeing process has no special requirements. Platbands are covered with a protective layer of varnish, stain, paint or linseed oil. Processing of wood, especially soft wood, is necessary – this will significantly extend the service life of carved platbands.
How to make carved trim on the window? DIY templates. Drawings and sketches
October 26, 2015
Fantastic beauty that has come down to us from time immemorial. It is visible to all on the old, beautiful, chopped houses, decorated with interesting carvings of platbands with openwork patterns and rich kokoshniki, located on the roof, and delights many modern people. You can admire such beauty for a long time, but to create it yourself is a very difficult task. However, with a large and irresistible desire, you can make carved frames on the windows (templates) with your own hands.
The problem of creating wood trim
The question is not that we need the skills of a true artist or imagination to create geometrically correct, interesting, ornate patterns. The problem is that products made from natural materials, such as wood, are rather short-lived due to the influence of external factors. The disadvantage of wooden frames and carving elements is that they are able to maintain their original appearance for decades if they are stored in dry rooms inside the house. And the humidity on the street will quickly provoke a tree to warp, crack, and perhaps even cause chips to appear in places where the thread is thin. Any paintwork is inferior to UV rays, and rain only aggravates the overall picture. This leads to the need to paint the product every year, constantly spending money on the coating and spending a lot of time on labor. Not to mention that it is necessary to repair or even replace such carved platbands with windows. Do-it-yourself templates for these products can be made from various materials.
Why not use a tree
This moment can cause difficulties, but do not get upset ahead of time. There is always a way to create a cozy and pleasant atmosphere and improve the appearance of the building. Modern technology has allowed us to create many materials that are more resistant to environmental influences. At the same time in all hardware stores they can be found in abundance. For example, you can use flat iron instead of wood. With it, you can make durable and equally beautiful carved frames on the windows with their own hands. Stencils in this case are needed in the same way as in the manufacture of this decorative element made of wood.
Flat iron or sheet, as they call it, given the factory classification, is a thin sheet, whose thickness is approximately 0.4–0.7 millimeters. In the store you can find rolls of this material from 20 to 50 meters. The width of such a roll according to the standard is 1025 centimeters. It is customary to cover this material with a different color sheet, and you can find both light and dark tin. In addition, each sheet of iron is covered with a protective film, which allows you to keep the original characteristics during transport and does not allow scratches and gouges.
To make your own carvings from flat iron on windows with your own hands (templates can be seen in this article), you will need the following materials and tools:
- First, you need a flat sheet of iron (tin), which will have a standard width of just over a meter.
- Secondly, you need a roll of cheap wallpaper. They are used as an aid in order to make carved platbands on the windows with their own hands. Stencils for wall decor and other patterns are applied on the wallpaper, and only then on the material.
- A set of clips, with which you can fix the templates. Fixing them will help to more accurately and smoothly transfer the pattern with the pattern to the surface of the material from which the carved frames will be made on the windows with their own hands. Sketches for creating blanks can be easily found and just as easy to use. In addition, they will be needed when you need to fix the finished parts with each other.
- Coupling brackets. It should be noted that their size should not exceed 4 millimeters.
- Regular pencil for drawing patterns and necessary marks.
- Eraser: after all, there is a chance that from the first time the pattern may not work out perfectly ideally.
- Ruler to better measure all surfaces and determine the accuracy of the patterns.
- The drill, whose diameter will be 8 millimeters. It will be needed in order to create holes for jigsaw. This will occur in those places where the upper carved trim on the windows will be cut. We no longer need the templates, the photos of which we could use as the basis for the stencil of blanks, at this step.
- The drill, whose diameter will not exceed 4 millimeters. With its help, holes will be created that are needed in the place where the riveted joints of parts will be.
- Electric fretsaw.
- Sandpaper, and useful both fine and medium. It is needed to eliminate burrs, which inevitably form during work.
- Riveting machine (hand-held) and a hammer, preferably rubber. Through these tools will be straightening billets.
The subtleties of the process of manufacturing platbands of tin
Before you start creating carved frames on the windows, you should make and install high-quality window slopes. It is necessary to remove the correct size and in order to make carved platbands on the windows with their own hands. Drawings can tell how to do it correctly. This is done taking into account the protruding edges of the slopes, calling on the walls. After all sizes are removed, it is worth calculating the characteristics of future casings. The standard width of this product is approximately 30 centimeters.
Next, you need to choose any smooth roll of wallpaper to make carved platbands out of it with your own hands (templates, of course). When the pattern is selected, you will need to prepare three “patterns”. One of them will be longer, it is needed for symmetrical lateral parts, the second and third, respectively, are shorter for the top and bottom of the window.
Creating a template
The cut strips need to be folded in half, and so that when drawing the sketch, the center of the pattern corresponds to the bend. This manipulation will save time and reduce the likelihood of errors when creating a template.
The fact is that during the cutting of the pattern both halves of the pattern will be created immediately, in other words, this will allow you to create perfectly smooth and regular carved frames on the windows with your own hands. The patterns will not be used as often as when drawing each part of the blank separately.
Workplace and materials
To create an ideal workplace for further work, you need to move together two tables, the height of which will be the same. Between the tables you need to leave a gap, which will be about 8 centimeters. This distance is necessary for the operation of the electric jigsaw. For the manufacture of platbands you will need metal of two colors. This combination is the easiest option. If you wish, you can change this parameter. Overhead top color, for example, choose white. It will be on it cutting patterns. As a second layer, you can choose a material of any color, since it will still not be visible, since it is used exclusively as a lining under the outer layer of the product, which is called carved platbands on the windows. We make templates with our own hands, let us recall once again.
Creation of platbands from sheet iron
It is necessary to take a sheet of flat iron and cut it into strips to create the platbands of the desired width. It should be turned over, face down, of the upper part blank, and also made a turn on the reverse side after fixing the template with clips. After that, they translate an openwork pattern to the material.
After the picture is displayed, you will need a power drill with a drill with a diameter of 8 millimeters. You need to drill through holes and start to cut the casing with a saw and a jigsaw. Next you need to put an iron strip on the table, and it is important that it is located clearly in the center of the table. This will allow you to cut out the picture clearly and smoothly without affecting the overall picture.
Creating the bottom blank
After the top has been cut, you can proceed to the next step, which is responsible for creating the bottom, which will serve as the background. To do this, you also need to cut the material into strips with the necessary characteristics of width and length. It should not be forgotten that the part will have an edging, that is, the width of this pattern must exceed the figures of external blanks. The ideal option in this case would be to increase the width of about five centimeters. Back produce a sheet flip – so that the front side is located on top. Next, you need to put on the top part of the workpiece platband, which is located face down and circle the outer edge along the edge of the picture, taking into account the indentation, and then you can start to cut the part.
Completion of work with blanks
After both blanks have been prepared, you need to remove the protective film from them and put them on top of each other. After that, the parts should be fixed with clips. Next, one or more holes should be made with a four millimeter drill. Using a riveting manual machine, you need to make a control hitch of parts, thereby preventing their divergence. Having carried out this action, you can begin to drill and rivet the entire structure. All – the product is completely ready for use. You can proceed to the next stage – install carved trim on the window with your own hands. We made templates for them earlier.
In order to carry out the installation of the platbands, first we need to find a ladder or stepladder that can be used to get to the windows. To install the products on a wooden wall, you will need:
- Small nails whose length does not exceed six centimeters.
- The syringe is assembly.
- Liquid silicone for mounting. However, it must match the color of the casing or be generally colorless. He will need to cover up the gap.
- A small art brush, as well as paint that matches the color of the product, with these tools will be painted nail caps, so that they do not spoil the look of trim.
To install the frames on the wall, which consists of stone, you will need:
- Electric drill.
- Drill with a diameter of 4 millimeters with pobeditovy tip.
- Plugs for screws. If they are not available, you can manually plan wooden and hammer them into the holes.
- Assembly syringe.
- Liquid mounting silicone, the color of which will either match the color of the product, or it will be transparent so as not to spoil the appearance of the structure.
- A small artistic brush, as well as paint, corresponding to the color scheme of the product. Using these tools, nail heads will be painted so that they do not spoil the look of the product, which is called “carved platbands on the windows”. Patterns made with your own hands, you can postpone until the next case.
The final stage of work
It is necessary to fit the backplates close to the edges of the slopes of the window, which protrude, and fix them to the wall. Then you need to eliminate all the cracks and irregularities, using silicone. After bringing the product into an aesthetic look, the work can be safely considered complete.
Based on the information above, it is immediately apparent that it is quite possible to create carved platbands on the windows with your own hands. Templates – simple or complex – can be found or also done by yourself. Therefore, using even minimal skills and imagination, it is quite possible to improve the appearance of the building without spending a lot of money and time.

Calypses on the windows do-it-yourself wooden, carved – types and methods of manufacturing
Putting trim on the windows with your own hands is the easiest and cheapest way to give the exterior of the house a personality and express its character that has survived from antiquity to the present day, see fig. In the old days, the illiterate alien, being guided by the platbands, could find the home of the right master, specialist, official, office or ceremonial place. In our time, the functions of window frames are predominantly decorative, but the patterns on them have not lost their significance, see below.
Houses with platbands on the windows
The platbands on the windows of the dwellings of peoples practicing mass wooden architecture appeared simultaneously with the windows “glazed” with a fish bubble and mica. Initially, their purpose was purely functional: to cover the insulation and wind insulation – hem – in the gap between the window and the frame.
The platbands with sacral patterns were first noted among the ancient Celts, but the true flowering of the art of creating carved platbands is associated with the unification of a resurgent Russia under the authority of Moscow and the overthrow of the Mongol yoke; Russian masters in woodcarving did not know their equal. The Bolsheviks wrote platbands into the remnants of the philistinism and declared war on extermination on them, but at present the artistically decorated window platbands are experiencing a second birth.
As far as possible, this article is intended to satisfy the readers’ demand for how to make beautiful trimings on the windows with their own hands, how to give them artistic expression and set them in place.
Types of design window casings shown in the photo. Slips (pos. 1) are attached to the wall; plug-in or box-shaped (pos. 2) – to the slopes of the window opening of the windows (that’s better) or in the frame of the window (worse). Overhead frames put on the window flush with the wall; plug-in – on the windows in the niches.
According to the possibilities of insulation and protection of the insulation, the window trim is divided into a frame (pos. 3) and a portal, pos. 5. Platband portal is often supplemented with a visor. The platband-frame almost does not protect the window insulation / sealing from locking and is placed on the windows from the inside or on the windows facing the shed, for example. on the veranda.
Traditionally, the installation of platbands is made by fastening to the wall or the slopes of the window. Now for this it is best to use self-tapping screws (4.2-6) x (80×150), if the wall is not wooden, in propylene dowels. The attachment points are positioned as evenly as possible at the rate of 1 point per 5-7 square meters. dm surface casing, outlined its outer contour. When attached to the slopes, the attachment points are placed in a row with a pitch of 150-300 mm (depends on the casing’s mass, which, in turn, depends on its artistic design, see below) along the centerline of the supporting (base) wall projecting outwards. The holes with fastener heads are either hidden in the upper levels of the tie (see below), or they are puttied and painted with the basic tone.
Platbands – “telescopes”
In modern homes, warmed and sheathed outside with siding / clapboard, windows are often placed flush with the base wall, otherwise the window will generally sink into the wall. In this case, there is nothing left to fix the casing but the window frame. In such a case invented so called. telescopic platbands, but quite reliably they will be kept only on windows in reinforced frames, intended for regions with a harsh climate; frame material – hardened PVC or modified wood (see below), does not matter much.
Device of telescopic platbands
All the “telescopicity” of the platbands comes down to installing them on the additional elements trimmed in place, rigidly connected to the window frame. Most reliably are the carts on the grooving side panels, on the left in fig. Telescopic trim systems with a groove in the frame (for example, on the right in the figure) are not intended for outdoor installation: the windout can be broken down by a gust of wind, breaking the frame at the same time.
If the window frame is modern wooden or PVC with a groove under the key, the telescopic platbands to such a window can be installed without removing it. If a PVC window with a wall with an inaccessible base surface is not intended for installing a platband, then there is no other way out how to remove the window, put a platband box in the opening, fasten it to the base wall, and reinstall the window. In this case, the casing box should have grooves at the anchors mounting points of the window.
Painted, cut-out and slotted platbands are made of wooden platbands (see below) from high-quality straight-layer pine or larch without knots. The thickness of the boards – from 30 mm. The spruce spruce is no good: outside the knots will soon be outlined under any surface, and there they will start falling out.
For carved platbands, wood is required that is suitable for carving — thin-layer, viscous, fairly dense — and resistant to outdoor conditions. The best breeds for this are oak and beech, but they are quite expensive. Linden, alder and aspen are suitable after 2-fold impregnation (the first impregnation is before penetration) with a water-polymer emulsion; Oil, silicone and mineral (borax solution) impregnation from decay does not increase the viscosity and surface strength of wood. Birch is absolutely unsuitable: from the outside no impregnation will save it from fungal damage.
Note: a magnificent carved platband is very simply obtained from the cheapest plywood, twice impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion. For more information about plywood trim, see the end.
Sometimes one board is not enough for the desired width of the platband, but to fasten 2-3 boards to the shield with steel fasteners in this case is a blunder. The wooden shield on the steel outside will soon be split, then the fasteners in the gap between the casing and the wall will rust and crumble. But it’s also impossible to assemble boards into a casing board for furniture without additional reinforcement, because the cabinet or table is not designed to withstand strong winds, rain and snow. Rally shields of boards for the crib track. see also fig. below:
- Polyethylene film is spread on the table or workbench with a 3-fold margin across the width of the future shield;
- The boards are folded into a bag on film and glued together with PVA or waterproof wood glue;
- When the glue grabs, the board pack is wrapped in film;
- Under the package in the film enclose and put on it plywood cheeks;
- Package with cheeks tightly wrapped with a clothesline;
- A pair of wooden wedges are knocked under the turns of the cord so that the cord is pulled as tight as possible;
- After 2-3 times of complete drying of the adhesive, the cord, cheeks and film are removed;
- On the underside (back side), the shield is additionally reinforced by stuffing bars 40×20, laid flat, across the boards.
Build a shield for the platband of the boards
Note: boards in a package are assembled, observing the rules of alternating the orientation of the layers of wood, as well as furniture panels, see on the left in fig.
Wooden unpainted frames do not look good on any non-wooden wall, even if its material imitates wood coloring well. In such cases, it is better to either install simple PVC platbands to the window (on the left in the figure.), Or more expensive polyurethane trimboards, the rest pos. in fig.Polyurethane platbands can imitate external stucco and painted multi-layered trimmed platbands (on the right in the figure); The latter option can be assembled on the glue from the items purchased separately.
Window platbands made of PVC and polyurethane
It is possible to perform artistically designed window frames, firstly, with frame frames (pos. 1 in the figure below) or salary, pos. 2;functionality, i.e. The protection of the window seal is the same. The platbands in salaries are the most informative and sacred meaningful, as we will discuss below. Frame frames in addition to the functional mainly decorative.
Types of decoration platbands on the windows
From the point of view of woodwork, frame platbands, in order of increasing complexity, are divided into:
- Cut-out – boards or shields are cut along the shape contour, pos. 3
- Screw, pos. 4 – a pattern is cut in the board / shield. They are relatively rare, since unstable.
- Welt multi-level, pos. 5, up to 5 or more levels – sawed out patterned modules are attached to a solid simple or cut-out base. In addition to durability, multi-level frames are good because the powerful fastener to the wall hides in the upper levels, and the upper levels themselves can be fixed with small imperceptible fasteners.
- With embossed relief details, pos. 6. Nowadays, technologically, it may be easier to cut, because on the tree looks quite appropriately acc. painted purchase polyurethane relief.
- With low convex thread, pos. 7 – look great, but very time consuming, you need to choose a lot of wood.
- With low indented thread, pos. 8 – labor intensity is less, but the work is more difficult, because It is very difficult to correct visible blemishes.
Note: on pos. 8 shows the casing with the so-called. pillow thread – the corners of the protruding fragments are smoothed. Pillows carvings look almost as luxurious as they are convex, but they are also very laborious.
As for the colorful decor, the trim can be painted, pos. 3, unpainted varnished, pos. 4, or a natural look, pos. 7, painted in different colors by levels, pos. 5, 6, and painted entirely, pos. 8. Painted cages are made almost exclusively, and natural ones are made of especially resistant wood species (bog oak, etc.)
On the sculpture casing
In general, about the platbands with sculptural carving, high (round, semicircular) and low, see fig. it would be possible not to mention in the article with the tag “do it yourself”. He who knows how to cut wood so does not need an explanation of how to make and put the trim on the window. But there is one moment, little known and experienced craftsmen.
Platforms with sculptural wood carvings
MDF – have you heard? In fact, this is tracing paper with MDF, medium density fiberboard, medium density wood board. The well-known fiberboard is a low density fiberboard, low-density wood board. And there is still HDF, high density fiberboard, high density fibreboard, we have little known due to the relative high cost. All these materials are quite environmentally friendly, because obtained by hot pressing wood pulp without a synthetic binder, the difference is only in the temperature and pressure of the press.
So, HDF, firstly, under the condition of 2-fold impregnation with a water-polymer emulsion, the rack is in outdoor conditions. And in terms of viscosity and density, it is suitable for fine woodcarving, but it is much cheaper than wood for artistic carving and is produced with large absolutely homogeneous plates. HDF cut is not as good as a nut, but quite like oak and beech.
The complete set of elements of the Russian salary is shown on the left in the figure; the names of its parts are also given there. In specific products, certain modules may be missing, because they overlap in significance.
The main with sacred significance are a teremets with a kokoshnik and an apron; informative-functional load are, as a rule, head and overhangs. A tympanum with an apron usually guards against evil, and a kokoshnik with a gear, robe and window sill are charms that attract good. Specific figures for this and that were in old Russia not only in every village, but almost in every house. Common for good can be traced a circle with radii, rays or wings (the Sun), a bird (the firebird is the heir of either the phoenix, or the simurg), the horse is the symbol of prosperity and social status, and the fish is the original positive symbol of Christianity. Universal amulets of evil – stylized floral ornament based on useful plants.
Elements of salary window platbands
Note: the wing, as part of the bird, carrying it in the sky, has the same sacred meaning as the bird. The Winged Sun is a good messenger. The Christian six-winged seraph is nothing but a pagan winged sun with an angelic face.
In the European-Eastern tradition, the universal symbols of goodness are the cartouche and the medallion. The medallion, of course, the Sun, and the cartouche is either a stylized tree of life, or a phoenix on it. Both do not contradict Christianity and the ancient Slavic beliefs. In Russia, they even undertook to combine the cartouche with the medallion, for which they made the cut-off cinnamon, on the right of fig.
In the city, timbrellum and kokoshnik were the most important; they were damaged from damage, the evil eye, etc. The patterns of the upper casings of the window of the town house are shown in fig. Upper – with a cartouche, stylized birds, fish (tails are clearly visible) and not less than 12 positive elements visible to a knowledgeable person.
Patterns of the upper trim plates on the windows
Lower – more for followers of the ancestral beliefs. There in the stylized solar circle is a kind of ancient Slavic deity. What is not quite clear, but definitely good. Good does it trample on evil in the form of a snake: note that the lower elements of this board are not symmetrical.
In the countryside, and especially in the forest, it was considered necessary to protect themselves equally from the upper (evil eye, slander, etc.) and lower evil: creeping reptiles and forest evil. The platbands with a weighted or heavy apron, equal in height or greater to the upper amulet, were called to help in this. An example of the upper and lower boards of the beregin platband with a weighted apron of a village house is given in fig. You can try to decipher it yourself.
Patterns of the upper and lower trim plates on the window
Ornaments window trim are usually built on the basis of the so-called. rapportov – elements self-conjugated in one direction, forming a linear seamless pattern, on the left in fig. By changing the size and number of rapports, you can quickly develop a slotted casing on any window. Combining only 2-3 rapport, it is possible to get a wide variety of patterns; The stencils of several kinds of fully conjugated rapports are shown on the right in Fig.
Construction of the casing ornament with the help of rapports
The patterns of the pattern do not necessarily have to fully mate with each other, this will make the pattern visually more complex and effective. For example pattern top row on the trail. ricebuilt upside-down “each subsequent fragment relative to the previous one. The rapports of the rest of the ornaments in fig. are conjugated either by broken lines or curved lines (marked in red).
Stencils of patterns for carved frames
Note 5: it is often difficult to decorate the corners of the frame platbands with the terminal elements common for rapport lines; it simply does not have enough space on the corner. In such a case on the trail. ricegiven patterns of equilateral tips of the ornament. Turning by 45 degrees, linear ornaments can be built from them. Details of these best cut out of plywood, see at the end.
Stencils of corner elements of carved platbands
If you want to make a unique carved trim, then the main difficulty along the way is the selection of the tool. In addition to flat chisels on 5, 10, 16/18 and 24 mm (pos. A in fig.) You will need slanting of the same width, but surely in pairs – right and left, pos. B. Angular chisels will be enough 6, 12 and 18/24 mm at an angle of 90 degrees, pos. AT.
Much more will require semicircular chisels, pos. G: for starters, 4, 8, 13 and 16 mm are normal, with a gutter depth equal to its width. 4 and 8-mm chisels will also need deep, so called. U-images, and 13 and 16 mm are also sloping.
Wood Carving Tools
For fine artistic carving, you will need more curved cranberries, normal, sloping and angular at 60 degrees, pos. D1, D2, D3. For pillow threads, one cannot do without reverse cranberries for smoothing the corners, pos. D2a. The minimum required sizes are marked in pos. D red.
You need to look for chisels for woodcarving in art stores, but buying all the originally necessary items will be very expensive. It is better to immediately take a set for woodcarving, but not for a fine sculpture of 40-60 objects (pos. E), it will not be cheaper, but at first you just won’t understand what most of these tools do. It is necessary to take a set for beginners from 12-15 items, pos. Well, it will only be necessary to buy knives-jambs for 90 and 60 degrees (shown by arrows in pos. E). Tools from such a set will be able to refine the cut-out overhead elements and perform a rather thin geometric thread, see fig.:
Woodcarving Samples for Beginners
Note: if you have the opportunity to use a manual milling machine for wood, then you can significantly improve the cut or cut-out platbands visually, by setting a shaped chamfer, gauge, on its edge with a shaped cutter, see fig. on right.
After the 2-fold impregnation with a water-polymer emulsion, the most trashy packaging plywood becomes suitable for mid-level artistic carving, and under painting with water-dispersion paint and varnishing with acrylic varnish turns out to be resistant to the outside like oak. But more importantly, the strength of plywood, unlike boards, is almost equal in all directions. The minimum thickness of 30 mm required for the trim is 5 layers of plywood and 5 trim levels for the trim. Thus you can make frames of plywood, visually almost not inferior to the masterpieces of the masters of the past; compare left and center in fig.
Antique carved platbands, modern plywood platband and jig saw for cutting out plywood
However, using a manual jigsaw to cut so much plywood for a long and inexact result, and a joiner’s jigsaw for such fine lace is unacceptably rough. You need a jigsaw machine, which is a stationary jigsaw, on the right in fig. Branded jigsaws are expensive, but not inferior to them you can do it yourself from a manual jigsaw (which does not deteriorate and remains suitable for the main job), an old sewing machine and other methods, see for example. track. video.
Video: homemade jigsaw machine for carving
Note: Sewing machine tools are the safest and may not be electrified if the machine is foot-operated. In this case, the frequency of the saws moves and is regulated elementary without any electronics: you only need to jerk with your feet more or less often.
The main condition for successful cutting on a jigsaw machine is to fill it with a cloth (sawing file) for a manual jigsaw, but not the usual flat one, but a round one, is commercially available. First, the round file is much less torn. Secondly, the jigsaw does not feel the hands of the operator. On a sharp corner, working with a flat canvas, without experience, you can “miss the mark” and leave a hole in the corner. A round file passes angle like clockwork and does not reach for detail.
Note in conclusion: before assembling the multi-level platband, paint / varnish the details of the levels only from 3 sides, except for the bottom, and plant them, except for small nails or self-tapping screws, also on glue or silicone sealant. The crown will be much stronger and more durable, because there will be no gaps between the levels for accumulating dust and dirt.
