Leveling the floor with plywood

Important! Lay the plywood sheets with a mixture that eliminates the intersection of four seams at one point (like brickwork).

  • After completing the fit, number the sheets and make a diagram of their styling with the indication of numbers. Remove the plywood to prepare the base for its installation.

Clean the concrete screed from small irregularities resulting from other types of repairs. Next, carefully remove debris and dust from the base with an industrial vacuum cleaner. If you do not have such equipment and nowhere to rent it, follow this procedure with an ordinary broom. After cleaning is complete, perform a priming that will help:

  • remove remaining dust;
  • penetrating deep into the concrete, give strength to the top layer of concrete screed;
  • improve the adhesion of dissimilar materials to each other.

On a note! Primer is called in the construction of one of the varieties of primer. The primer is made of the same material (paint, glue, mastic), which is supposed to cover the surface. However, it contains a greater amount of solvent, which provides better penetration into the treated surface. Apply primer with roller or brush.

  • Apply the adhesive mastic with a notched trowel onto the prepared substrate. The thickness of the layer should be about two millimeters.
  • According to the scheme, put a sheet of plywood in its place and secure it with screws with plastic dowels. At the same time drill a concrete screed to a depth of 6 mm directly through the plywood. Hole prosenkuyte to screw the cap screws in the leveling material.
  • After the laid plywood is polished, getting a perfectly flat and strong base for parquet or other topcoat.

Now you know how to properly level the floor with plywood. Choose the appropriate method, purchase the material and go ahead. If you want to hire a team of builders, you can talk to them in the same language and select real professionals for the work.

Leveling the base of the floor with plywood – analysis of several ways

Having started a major overhaul or simply deciding to change the old flooring, you will have to seriously approach the preparatory work. If you are going to lay linoleum or laminate, the subfloor must be perfectly level. However, a concrete screed is not always the best option. If you value your time, you can level the floor with plywood. This method has several advantages.

Why plywood?

The presented material has the following advantages:

  • Sheets are natural, so they do not emit toxic substances and, accordingly, are considered environmentally friendly.
  • Plywood bends remarkably, while there are no cracks on it.
  • The material is characterized by equally good strength in all directions. Therefore, the floor after leveling can withstand heavy loads.
  • The good hardness of the material allows you to create a perfectly flat surface to mount the laminate or linoleum.
  • Leveling the floor with plywood is quick, as the sheets are large. With one plate, you can close a substantial portion of the base.
  • Plywood is well transported.
  • The material does not emit foreign odors.
  • The low weight of the product makes it possible to reduce the load on the floor slabs.

As you can see, plywood is ideal for leveling the base. It will allow to install laminate or linoleum quickly, which will significantly shorten the repair time.

How to correctly determine the height of the level drops?

This procedure must be performed to determine the zero level of the base. It is best to use a laser level for this purpose. However, if it is not, then you can apply the usual construction level.

To start in the center of the walls at the same height, mark the points that connect the same line. So you define the “horizon line.” According to it, you will determine the zero level. After this, the smallest and largest deviation of the horizontal level is determined on the basis of this. Video:

Naturally, the subfloor must be prepared for alignment. If on the basis of the boards are already laid, and they are in good condition, then you can leave everything as is. Corroded and decayed items must be removed. If necessary, you need to eliminate the squeaks of the floorboards, it is better to fix the fasteners, check the heating system (if any).

What tools are needed for work?

In order to level the floor with plywood, it is necessary to assemble all those devices, without which the work cannot be done:

  1. Jigsaw with an appropriate canvas. It is useful for cutting plywood, as well as laminate.
  2. Roulette and pencil for marking.
  3. Building level
  4. Screwdriver.
  5. Screws.

Which alignment method to choose?

Leveling a wooden floor with plywood can be done using several methods. However, the quality of the future foundation also depends on the choice. You can determine the alignment method as follows:

  • If the vertical drop does not exceed 2 mm per 1 m2, then the subfloor can not be leveled, even if you lay linoleum or laminate.
  • With properly laid floorboards and a uniform level difference, the height of which is not more than 5 mm, plywood can be fixed directly to the boards. This does not require additional elements. Note that the correct installation is the alternation of floorboards, which is performed in accordance with the requirements of the standard.
  • Height differences that are in the range of 1-8 cm can be eliminated with the help of plywood mounted on tape or point supports. That is, you will have to build a special crate or attach the material to the laid logs. In the first case, a wooden beam is used. Note that all wood materials must be pre-treated with a special antiseptic impregnation.

With large level drops you will have to completely remove the floor. If it was fixed on the logs, then they should be carefully examined. During the selection of the alignment method, it is necessary to take into account how strongly the procedure will reduce the height of the ceilings.

Features of mounting plywood without lag

Before you use the presented material, it must be left in the repaired room for several days. Plywood must “get used” to the conditions in which it will be operated. In this case it is not necessary to lay the support bar. Instead, you can use evenly protruding tubercles floorboards.

In addition to plywood, this method of leveling involves the use of cement-bonded chipboard or GFL. It should also determine the thickness of the sheets. For example, if the drops are small, and the width of the boards on the base is 20 cm, then it is necessary to take plywood, the thickness of which will vary between 8-10 mm. In other cases, you may need a plate thickness of 1.8-2 cm.

Laying material is as follows:

  1. Install bosses around the perimeter of the room with a small distance from the walls (2 cm).
  2. Plywood should be mounted with a gap between the sheets, so that when expanding and narrowing it does not heave. A sufficient distance of 3-5 mm. Note that sheets must be laid on the brickwork principle. Joints should not be the same.
  3. Now you can fix the material on the “ridges” of the base. Note that the holes for the screws must be drilled in advance. This will give the opportunity to drown fasteners. In addition, during screwing, you can use a metal corner.

If the plywood sheets on one side have a rough surface, then the unpolished side should face upwards. This will improve the adhesion with the adhesive composition, which may be linoleum.

Features of alignment of the basis with use of a tape support

There is no cracking or lag. If you will mount plywood to lags. the supports should be located at a distance of 3 cm from the walls. The step between them is 40-50 cm. The laying technology is as follows:

  • Fitting sheets. This is done without fastening. You just need to expand the sheets on the supports, taking into account all the necessary clearances. If necessary, plywood should be cut. It is also desirable to number the sheets.
  • Now you should install logs on the walls. If raising the level is highly undesirable, then instead of a bar you can use second-rate boards.
  • Mounting cross. To lags should be fastened with screws. In this case, the use of metal corners is desirable.
  • Setting the vertical level of the resulting structure. If the height of the lag in some places is not enough, you can raise them with sand or roofing felt.
  • Final fixation of the supporting bars, plywood flooring.

Note that the space between the lags can be filled with insulation: expanded clay, mineral wool.

Features of alignment in other ways

Leveling a wooden floor with plywood can also be done with the help of small lags or sabashka supports. In the first case, the vertical level difference should not exceed 8 cm. To create a unified system of supports, short bars and slats are used. However, this method is very difficult, since it requires a lot of work on the design calculation. It should be as accurate as possible, because you will install each support separately. If you want to lay linoleum in a large room, it is better to abandon this method of alignment.

For arranging the battens, shabashki from ordinary wooden board, slats and plywood (OSB boards) are suitable. As a result, you should have a kind of wooden grid, the size of the squares in which will be 30×30 cm.

Please note that when using any of these alignment methods, we should not forget about the organization of underground ventilation. Otherwise, wood elements may start to rot. After the base is ready, you can begin to install linoleum or another coating.

Ways and nuances of leveling the floor with plywood do it yourself

  • Selection for alignment
  • Rules of work
  • Align without lag
  • Tape support

In construction there are various ways in which you can level a wooden floor. And among them for a long time and rightfully one of the most popular is the method – leveling the floor with the help of plywood sheets. It is quite simple to perform and, not least, does not require large financial and labor costs. All the technological details of this method are well developed, moreover, when applying it, it is not necessary to wait for the screed to set or the material to sit down. This is one of the best ways to level the floor by yourself.

Leveling the floor with the help of plywood sheets is not expensive, and it is also quite simple to carry out this procedure yourself.

Leveling the floor with plywood with your own hands can be done in several ways, depending on the condition of the floor and the height difference between the floorboards. Despite the simplicity in execution, it also has its own nuances that you definitely need to know, so that later you don’t have to spend your nerves, time, effort, and money to rework wrong work.

Selection for alignment

Leveling a plank or parquet floor with plywood is most often done in order to lay a soft floor covering on it: linoleum, carpet, etc. Plywood has long and successfully been used to perform comprehensive repair work indoors. It is mainly used for leveling the plank floor, but is also well suited for leveling concrete and cement foundations.

Birch plywood is durable and environmentally friendly, and a pleasant woody fragrance will add comfort to the room.

Plywood is used not only for leveling, but also for the repair of wooden floors. This is most often done when gaps appear between the floorboards or when it is necessary to raise the overall level of the floor in the room.

When choosing a material there are several subtleties that you need to know. It is best to take birch plywood for leveling the floor, as it is an environmentally friendly material, and the healing properties of birch are well known.

Leveling the plank floor is best done with 10-12 mm sheets. When using sheets of a smaller thickness, leveling the plank floor is difficult to do qualitatively, and a large thickness of sheets will draw additional costs.

It is also not necessary to use the highest quality material for leveling the floor; lower classes will also be suitable, on which you can also save a lot. But, when leveling the floor with plywood, the material must be selected to be moisture resistant, otherwise the equipped floor will be short-lived.

When buying plywood you need to carefully inspect each sheet. If you find cracks or peeling in it, it is better not to take such material – this is an obvious marriage. Also pay attention to the presence of knots in the sheets: in plywood, their presence is permissible, if the diameter of the knot does not exceed 25 mm.

Rules of work

Arrangement of compensatory gaps is necessary to prevent bending and destruction of plywood sheets.

Sheets brought to the premises should be given time to acclimatize. If the sheets of plywood are planned to be used in a heated room, then this requires at least two days, if the room is unheated – at least a day. Keep the material necessary, putting on the edge, so as not to warp.

Plywood can change its size due to temperature and humidity. Therefore, when leveling the plank floor with plywood, the sheets should not be laid directly against the walls, you must leave a compensation gap of 15-20 mm.

For the same reason, sheets should not be laid close to each other. Between them, gaps of 3-5 mm should be left to absorb shocks. If the width of the room involves the laying of two or more rows of plywood, the adjacent rows should be shifted relative to each other, using the principle of masonry when leveling the floor. The offset must be no less than a quarter of a sheet and no more than half of it.

When laying, intersecting four butt joints at one point cannot be allowed under any circumstances.

Under the influence of moisture, large sheets will inevitably warp. To avoid this, it is better to cut them into 4 smaller ones. Sheets with one-sided roughness, which are originally intended for rough flooring under the finishing coating, are usually laid with the rough side up to improve adhesion. If the plywood itself acts as a clean floor, then put it with the ground side up. In this case, it is better to seal the caps of the mounting screws with acrylic sealant, and apply a protective layer of varnish on top of the laid material.

To level the floor you will need tools:

  • jigsaw or handsaw with small teeth;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • carpenter level;
  • chop cord and piece of chalk.

Align without lag

Floor leveling scheme with plywood on logs.

This method is considered the easiest to perform. With this method, there is no need to install a support bar for plywood, since the plank floor has a relatively small difference in surface height (up to 5 mm per m²) and by itself quite evenly and reliably performs the functions of the support bar.

Plywood is attached to the highest points of the floor, pre-installed during visual inspection. Moreover, these attachment points need to be distributed evenly over the entire floor area.

Sheets of plywood are attached to the plank floor with screws. In this case, be sure to drown not only the screw, but his hat. In order not to spoil the sheets in the process of fastening, the holes for the screws should be drilled in two stages.

First, the hole is drilled with a drill with a diameter equal to the diameter of the mounting screw. Then the top of this hole to a depth of 5 mm should be expanded with a drill with a diameter equal to the diameter of the cap of the screw. Mounting should be done, always retreating from the edge of the plywood sheet at least 20-25 mm.

Tape support

To level the floor by this method, you must first make a batten from the longitudinal lag and crossbars. Lags set around the perimeter of the room, leaving a gap of 30 mm from the walls. The pitch of both the installed lag and the crossbars attached to them depends on the size of the plywood sheet and is usually in the range of 0.4 to 0.5 m.

In order not to get confused and properly crate, you must first perform a fitting room. For this, sheets of plywood are laid out without fixing and outlining the contour of each sheet with chalk. In order to avoid mixing up the sheets when laying them, they should be numbered.

Then, according to the marking, lags are mounted. The best material for a log is a timber with a section of 40×40 or 50×50 cm. But if it is impossible to raise the floor by such a value, then second-class boards or even cut plywood strips are perfectly suitable for logs.

In accordance with the size of the sheet, we calculate the step jumpers. By lags jumpers are fastened with screws, it is better to use metal corners to strengthen the mount. Lags and cross beams should be set in a single horizontal plane, using for this weed or ruberoid linings, or wood linings. The horizontal is calibrated using a carpentry level. After the alignment is completed, plywood is attached to the crate.

No matter how you level the floor, remember that plywood is a fragile material, and you need special care when working with it. But the result is worth the effort. Indeed, as a result, you get not only a flat, but also a warmer floor.

Good luck to you! The warmth and comfort of your home.
