How to make a frame garage with your own hands?
The use of frame technology will significantly reduce the cost of building a garage. After all, a small mass of the building reduces the requirements for the foundation, and the use of boards and oriented strand board (OSB) as the main building material allows reducing delivery costs. After all, it is possible to bring boards and OSB in a small car with a small carrying capacity, and for delivery of bricks, sand and cement in the right quantities you need a serious truck and a crane with a lifting capacity of at least 2 tons. In this article we will tell you about how to build a frame garage with your own hands from choosing a site and creating a project to roofing and connecting communications.
Choosing a place for the garage
An ideal place for a garage would be a playground on a hillock not far from the house. The hillock will protect the garage, the inspection pit and the car from the water that has risen during the heavy rain. If there is no such site near the house, then you will have to choose a place, focusing on the proximity to the road and elevation relative to ground level. Never build a garage in hollows and hollows, otherwise even light rain will lead to a rise in the water level in it. It is desirable that a 220 or 380 volt line should pass next to the garage, this will facilitate construction and equip the garage with electric heating.

Most often, garages are built from unplaned boards with a moisture content of 12–14%, but they often use lumber of natural moisture. The latter will cost a little less, but the garage of such boards cannot be sheathed for finishing in the first year, which leads to waste of material. Therefore, experienced builders use only well-dried boards.
As the bearing elements use a bar with a section of 100х100 mm or a board with a section of 50х250 mm. As an internal frame of walls use a board with a section of 25х100 mm. Foam or mineral wool up to 5 cm thick is used for insulation, and up to 10 cm in cold regions. A waterproof OSB 15–20 mm thick, wagon board or metal sheeting are used for external plating. Apply MDF, plywood of 5–10 mm thickness or the same OSB thickness for internal plating. This combination of materials allows you to create a durable and inexpensive garage.

If you decide to build a pit, then the technology for creating the foundation will have to be changed, digging out the pit for it. Determine the depth of the pit based on your height and needs. You can make a recumbent pit, obrudovav her cart, you can make a sitting or standing pit. The difference is only in height and in the fact that in a standing pit you will be able to perform any kind of work, you will not be able to remove the motor and box normally while sitting down, and the recumbent pit is suitable only for a small car maintenance. Here are the approximate depths of the pit and the pit for it:
- recumbent 50/80 cm;
- sitting 130/170 cm;
- standing 170/210 cm
For concrete casting, use the same technology as for casting concrete grillage. In the pit can provide a niche for the tool. The width of the finished pit should be 5-10 cm less than the distance between the inner side of the wheels of the same axis. Fix the corners or steel pipes on the surface of the pit that will not allow the car to fall into it.

Delivery and storage of material
Having prepared the foundation and letting it stand, bring the boards. Frame construction allows the use of boards of natural moisture, but you need to understand that saving them, you will seriously lose in terms of construction. After all, it will not be possible to sheathe the garage for clean because of the very large shrinkage of the board of natural moisture. Therefore, it is desirable to purchase a dried board with a moisture content of 12–14%. To store such a board, you will need a shelter protected from rain. It can be made of wooden bars or aluminum tubes and polyethylene. Be sure to provide airing boards under the canopy.
First you need to assemble the side walls on the ground. To do this, in accordance with the project, cut the vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements, then proceed to the assembly. You can do this operation yourself. To attach the boards to each other, use metal corners and powerful self-tapping screws. These accessories are sold in most hardware stores. Be sure to check the corners of the extreme boards, because the shape of the garage depends on them. The optimal distance between the vertical boards is 70–100 cm, and between the horizontal 120–150 cm. Pay special attention to the mounting holes, because even a small mistake will make it impossible for you to install the wall into place the first time.
Installation of the wall should be carried out by two to three people, and if the length of the wall is more than 6 meters, or a height of more than 3 meters, then you have to either call more people or use a crane.
If you do not have the opportunity to assemble more than two people or use a crane, then first assemble a box of each wall consisting of two vertical and two horizontal boards. You can install such a box by two people. Install both side boxes, then connect them with vertical boards to form the rear box. After that, collect the front box. Now you can install portable small-sized woods and fill all the boxes with vertical and horizontal boards. Remember, vertical boards can only be cut if you plan to install a window. In all other cases, they must be whole. But cut the horizontal boards based on the distance between the vertical boards. Connect the whole structure with the help of angles and screws. Do not forget to install diagonal boards in every fifth cell.
If possible, invite an experienced carpenter or roofer to create the roof, because in one article only the general principles of this work can be given. First, install the ceiling boards (lags) at a distance of 80–140 cm from each other. If you plan to use the attic as a storage room, then the distance should be reduced, otherwise increased. To install the lag in them and the upper horizontal boards of the frame, cut holes that are equal to the thickness of the board, and the depth is half the width of the board. Due to this, the logs will become flush with the top edge of the frame. Lags should act sideways at 50–60 centimeters. After installing the rafters of the roof, you will cut them to the required length using a circular or chain saw.
If you work together and there is no possibility to call anyone for help, then instead of log you will have to install a complex structure (triangle), which includes logs, rafters and vertical supports. In this case, you can do without cuts in the boards and put these triangles directly on the frame, which will greatly facilitate installation. After that, install a vertical board that connects the upper parts of the triangles, as well as the lower board connecting the lower parts. Do not forget to install at least 2 (preferably 4) diagonal struts that protect the roof from strong winds.
Covering and warming
For sheathing use profiled. Begin to sheathe the bottom, laying sheets with overlap, thanks to this, during a rain, the water will drain without getting inside. Sheathing the garage wagon board or its analogs, lay the board horizontally, so it will look more beautiful. If you decide to sheathe a GSP garage, then the sheets will need to be adjusted so tightly and precisely that the gap between them in any place does not exceed 0.5 mm, and after the finishing of the sheathing the joints must be covered with a mixture of PVA and fine wood dust.
Lastly, sheathe the roof, do not forget to install drains. It is desirable that the metal profile of the roof protrudes 30–40 cm behind the walls, this will increase the protection of the walls against water. When finished with the outer skin, proceed to the insulation, to do this, put into the cells of the walls cut into pieces pieces of foam or mineral wool, then sew them with plywood or OSB. Fiberboard can be used, but its strength is insufficient, so the material is quickly covered with scratches. To insulate the attic, it is enough to lay the insulation material in the cells formed by the lags; this is several times simpler than warming the roof along rafters.
If you install metal gates, then the hinges on them must fully correspond to the hinges on the supporting elements. To install the roller gates, you must invite a specialist. Therefore, the best choice for a frame garage – the gate of the wagon board. Even the most modern steel gates will not help from car theft, therefore their function is rather decorative. The most beautiful garage is obtained if you trim it with a carriage board and make a gate out of it, strengthening each door from the inside with two horizontal and one diagonal plank. Special color will give the garage decorative loops (sheds), which are sold in hardware stores.
Electricity and heating
If there is an opportunity to connect the garage to the power supply line, you will definitely get technical conditions and install a meter in accordance with them. This will save you from problems with the electricity supplier. For heating insulated garages, wall-mounted infrared electric heaters are most effective. For heaters, be sure to install a separate circuit breaker and temperature controller.
Garage of timber: how to build with your own hands?

By type of construction wooden garages can be divided into one-piece and frame, according to the materials – to garages of CBS and garages of timber and boards. Under the frame garage of the beam is quite suitable columnar foundation in the form of monolithic concrete pillars, pile, screw or prefabricated pillars of reinforced concrete blocks. The need to build a more solid foundation can be caused by moving, weak soils, high soil moisture, proximity to groundwater, large elevation differences on the construction site. The frame consists of a base (bottom) strapping, support columns, struts and the top trim. Strengthening the rigidity of the lower rims produced straps, fastened on the inside of the strapping. The connection of the uprights with the top trim is made by special spikes or anchors / brackets / nails.
Quantity of sawn timber
To build a garage 6×4 meters according to the drawing below, you will need: Bar 100x100x6000 for the frame – 1.08 cubic meters or 18 pieces. Bar 100x150x6000 for the goal post / door and socle binding – 0.63 cubic meters or 7 pieces. Board 25x100x3000 per crate and skin – 1.5 cubic meters or about 200 pieces. Board 50×150 × 6000 on rafters, floors, door frame / door – 2.03 cubic meters or 45 pieces.
Garage frame bottom trim
The lower rims of the building are made up of a timber-jointed “in the paw” section of 100×150, impregnated with used engine oil. It is possible to process the lower edges of the crowns at the stage of the frame assembly, and the impregnation of the remaining sides is postponed until the flooring. Additionally strengthen the connection of the crowns of the basement strapping between them can be steel angle or staples.
Installation of vertical uprights and transverse beams of the frame
Having finished with the bottom strapping, you can proceed to the vertical racks of timber 100x100x6000. They, according to our drawing, will have a height of 2685 mm along the high side of the frame and 1900 mm along the low side.
After installing the racks connect the opposite sides of the frame (high and low) transverse beams. Racks under the garage doors with doors 1700×2500 and under the door – timber 100×150. Fastening racks with bottom strapping and crossbeam – thorn-groove connection.
The skeleton of the garage from the bar “Skeleton” of our garage is actually ready. It remains to put the struts (beam 100×100) under the corner posts, which are removed after placing the rafters with seats for support beams. Rafters – board 50x150x4500. Upon completion of the frame, you can go to the roof and crate.
Sheathing of the garage frame can be OSB with external windproof membrane. It is highly desirable to fill the space between the external and internal plates with a medium average hardness or other insulation. As an option: the frame of the garage is sheathed with boards, then comes waterproof construction paper and finishing. After covering and roofing, the gate is installed.
